Legion baseball finishes 1-2 at district tournament
Montgomery Post 79 Legion Baseball competed in the District 3 Legion Baseball Tournament July 19-21 and July 26-28 hosted by Norwood Young America and Cologne and finished play with a 1-2 record.
Game 1: Montgomery 5 - Plato 3
Game 2: Pine Island 6 - Montgomery 5 (9 innings)
Game 3: Cannon Falls 10 - Montgomery 2
In the opening game held Saturday, July 20, Montgomery defeated Plato by a score of 5-3. Post 79 opened the scoring in the top of the first with Cole Pint drawing a walk, Nathan Rosier reached on an error and both scored following a double to right by Ryan Iverson.
Robbie D'Amato followed with a double to left scoring Iverson with the third run of the inning and a 3-0 lead. Plato cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the first on a walk and a two base error.
In the fifth inning, Montgomery scored their fourth run on a single by Aaron Dwyer driving in Andy Feddema from third who had reached on a single. In the seventh, Post 79 added another run on a single by Ryan Iverson and an error putting them in the lead 5-1. Plato came back in the bottom of the seventh scoring two runs but came up short in their rally with Montgomery prevailing with a 5-3 win. Trevor Smisek started on the mound, allowing one run and one hit, walking six and striking out five to get the win.
Joe Rynda pitched the final three innings giving up two runs on three hits, three strikeouts and no walks. Leading hitters for Post 79 were Ryan Iverson with a double and a single, Nathan Rosier with two hits, and a single by Andy Feddema.
Game 2
The second game of the tournament paired Montgomery with Pine Island. In a game that went nine innings, Pine Island nipped Montgomery by a score of 6-5.
Montgomery took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on singles by Pat Lloyd, Ryan Iverson and an RBI single by Nathan Rosier. Pine Island tied the score in the third on a walk, single and fielder's choice.
Post 79 then opened up a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning on singles by Cole Pint, Ryan Iverson, Robbie D'Amato, Nathan Rosier and a double by Aaron Dwyer.
Pine Island came back in the top of the sixth scoring three times and cutting the lead to 5-4. In the top of the seventh Pine Island rallied to tie the score with a run after two were out and nobody on base. Pine Island then pushed across a run in the top of the ninth to take a 6-5 lead. Andy Feddema singled and was at third base when the final out was recorded leaving Post 79 just short of their own comeback.
Ted Christian started the game going 5 1/3 innings giving up four runs on five hits, six walks and one strikeout. Joe Rynda relieved for 3 2/3 innings allowing two runs on four hits and striking out three in absorbing the loss.
Leading hitters for Montgomery were Andy Feddema with three hits, Cole Pint, Pat Lloyd, Ryan Iverson, and Nathan Rosier each had two hits, and one hit apiece for Robbie D'Amato, and Aaron Dwyer.
On Sunday, July 21, Montgomery continued play in the District 3 Tournament against Cannon Falls and were defeated by a score of 10-2.
Cannon Falls opened the scoring in the top of the third scoring three runs on one hit, a walk and an error.
The Bombers then put the game out of reach in the top of the fourth inning scoring seven times with two outs giving Cannon Falls a 10-0 lead.
Montgomery got on the board in the bottom of the fifth scoring twice on singles by Trevor Smisek, Pat Lloyd, and Robbie D'Amato cutting the lead to 10-2, but were unable to cut into the lead any further.
Cole Pint started for Post 79 going 3 and 2/3 innings giving up nine runs on five hits, four walks, and one strikeout in taking the loss. Ted Christian faced three batters and gave up one run on two walks and one hit. Ryan Iverson pitched the final 3 1/3 innings of relief allowing no runs, one hit, walked one and struck out one.
Leading hitters for Post 79 were Trevor Smisek with two hits and Pat Lloyd, Robbie D'Amato and Aaron Dwyer each with one hit. Montgomery Post 79 finished their season with a 7-6 regular season record and an 8-8 overall record for the year.
Legion baseball team begins playoffs

The Montgomery American Legion Baseball Team for Post 79 will begin playoffs in the 2013 Third District Division II Baseball Tournament beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday, July 20.
The local team takes on Plato in the first round of the double-elimination tournament. The winner takes on the winner of the game against Pine Island and Lester Prairie. The tournament continues Sunday.
According to the American Legion Post 79 website, the members of the team include Ted Christian, Robbie D’Amato, Aaron Dwyer, Andrew Feddema, Matt Holicky, Ryan Iverson, Joe Kalina, Max Kalina, Pat Lloyd, Cole Pint, Nathan Rosier, Joe Rynda, Trevor Smisek, Ryan Thompson, and David Trcka.

Montgomery shuts out Jordan
On Monday, July 1, the baseball team of Montgomery Legion Post 79 defeated Jordan 10-0 in five innings with a 14-hit attack and a no-hit shutout pitching performance by Ted Christian.
Montgomery opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first on a two out single by Ryan Iverson, a double by Robbie D'Amato and a single by Nathan Rosier.
Post 79 added three runs in the second on singles by Andy Feddema and Pat Lloyd along with a Ryan Iverson double. Two runs in the third on four base hits, followed by three runs on four more hits in the fifth completed the 10-0 rout.
Ted Christian retired 15 of the 16 batters he faced, giving up only a walk in the first inning and had 6 strikeouts on the evening.
Leading hitters for Montgomery with two hits apiece were Pat Lloyd, Ryan Iverson, Nathan Rosier, Aaron Dwyer and Andy Feddema.
Adding one hit each were Cole Pint, Robbie D'Amato, Joe Rynda, and Ryan Thompson.
Legion team records a win against Cannon Falls

The Montgomery Legion Post 79 baseball team continued their busy season last week when they took on Belle Plaine on Wednesday, and Cannon Falls on Thursday.
Belle Plaine 8 – Montgomery 3
The home team traveled to Tiger Park in Belle Plaine on Wednesday, June 26, for a Legion baseball tilt. When the dust finally settled, Belle Plaine came away with an 8-3 victory.
Montgomery opened the scoring in the top of the first with Cole Pint scoring on an RBI single by Nathan Rosier. In the bottom of the second, Belle Plaine took advantage of two Montgomery errors and grabbed a 2-1 lead. Post 79 regained the lead at 3-2 in the top of the third when Ryan Iverson and Robbie D’Amato singled and both scored on a two out double by Aaron Dwyer. Belle Plaine went ahead for good in the fifth scoring three times on four hits and added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 8-3 in favor of Belle Plaine.
Cole Pint started on the hill for Montgomery and pitched five innings giving up six runs on six hits along with two walks and one strike out. Iverson and Feddema led the offense with two hits apiece. Pint, Pat Lloyd, D’Amato, Rosier and Dwyer each collected one hit.
Montgomery 3 – Cannon Falls 2
Montgomery went two extra innings to defeat a very good Cannon Falls Legion baseball team by a score of 3-2 the following day. Ryan Iverson delivered the game winning single in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and one out. Cannon Falls opened the scoring in the top of the third inning on a double, a fielder’s choice and an error. After being held hitless through four innings, Feddema opened the fifth with a single. With two out, Lloyd hit a double scoring Joe Kalina with the tying run, putting the score at 1-1. Cannon Falls then took advantage of two Montgomery errors and scored the go ahead run without the benefit of a hit.
In the bottom of the sixth, it was Post 79’s turn to take advantage of a mistake. Ryan Thompson opened the inning by reaching on an error. After a sacrifice bunt by Rosier moved D’Amato to second base, Ted Christian laced a double to right scoring the tying run making the score 2-2. The score remained tied until Iverson’s RBI single in the ninth.
Joe Rynda started for Post 79 going five innings, giving up one run on only three hits while walking three and striking out five Bomber hitters. Christian went four innings allowing one run on three hits, one walk and striking out five in picking up the win in relief. Leading hitters for Montgomery were Christian with a double and a single along with one hit apiece from Lloyd, Iverson and Feddema.
Montgomery Post 79 played on Monday, July 1 against Jordan, and on Tuesday, July 2 vs. Kenyon-Wannamingo at Memorial Park.

Legion boys fall to Le Sueur
On Monday, June 17, Montgomery Legion Post 79 rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh, but came up just short in their loss to Le Sueur – Henderson by a score of 7-5 leaving the tying runs on second and third.
Le Sueur Henderson opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a double, wild pitch and a ground out. Montgomery answered in the top of the second inning with an RBI single by Aaron Dwyer.
LSH took back the lead in the bottom of the second with two unearned runs putting the score at 3-1. In the bottom of the fifth, LSH scored two runs followed by another two runs in the sixth giving the Giants 7-1 lead going into the seventh inning.
Montgomery then scored four runs on two hits and three LSH errors, but it wasn’t enough to pull out the victory.
Leading hitters for Post 79 were Cole Pint and Aaron Dwyer each with two hits. Pat Lloyd, Ryan Iverson, Robbie D’Amato, Nathan Rosier and Ted Christian had one hit apiece. Cole Pint started on the mound and pitched 4-2/3 innings, Ryan Thompson finished the final 1-1/3 innings in relief.

Legion ball is 1-2 after first 3 games
The Montgomery Post 79 baseball team opened its 2013 season on Thursday, June 6 with an 11-5 loss to Sibley East at Memorial Park.
After allowing an unearned run in the first inning to the Wolverines, Montgomery returned to take a 4-1 lead on doubles by Ryan Iverson and Joe Rynda, singles by Ted Christian and Andy Feddema, along with walks to Nathan Rosier and Robbie 'Amato.
Sibley East answered with two runs in the second inning making the score 4-3. In the third inning, Joe Rynda led off with his second double of the game and would later score on a fielder's choice, putting Post 79 up 5-3.
The fifth inning, however, turned out to be the backbreaker in a tight game when Sibley East scored seven runs on only two hits. The Wolverines then added another run in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Leading hitters for Montgomery were Rynda with a pair of doubles and singles by Iverson, D'Amato, Christian and Feddema.
Ted Christian started on the mound and went four innings. Trevor Smisek and Joe Rynda worked the final three innings of the game.
Jordan 5 - Montgomery 4
On Monday, June 10, the team traveled to the Mini Met for a league game against Jordan. In a very tightly played game that came down to the last out, Jordan came away with a 5-4 victory over Post 79. Iverson opened the scoring in the top of the first with a solo homerun giving Montgomery an early 1-0 lead. Jordan then tied the score in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly. In the third inning, Jordan scored two runs on a walk, a hit and an error putting the Hubmen up 3-1. Montgomery came back with two runs in the top of the fourth with the help of three Jordan errors, knotting the score at 3-3.
Jordan then took a 5-3 lead by scoring a run in the fifth and one in the sixth inning. However, with two outs in the top of the seventh and Cole Pint on first, singles by Iverson and D'Amato scored Pint making the score 5-4.
Montgomery, however, was unable to push the tying run across from second base. Pint started on the mound for Post 79 and went 5 and 1/3 strong innings with Rynda throwing the final 2/3 of an inning. Leading hitters for Montgomery were Iverson going 2-2 with a homerun, Pint and D'Amato each with a single.
Montgomery 7 - Belle Plaine 6
On Thursday, June 13, Montgomery Post 79 scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Belle Plaine 7-6 at Memorial Park. Rosier got the game-winning single, scoring Iverson to cap off the four run comeback victory.
Belle Plaine scored on run in the first and two runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Post 79 came back in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 3-2 with two runs coming on a walk to Pat Lloyd, singles by Iverson and D'Amato and a Rosier sacrifice fly. Following a Belle Plaine run in the top of the fourth, Aaron Dwyer tripled to open the bottom half of the fourth and scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Feddema, cutting the lead to 4-3.
Belle Plaine added two runs in the top of the sixth inning extending their lead to 6-3.
In the top of the seventh gave Montgomery the momentum back by striking out their 3,4 and 5 hitters in succession. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Trevor Smisek reached first when a third strike got away from the catcher. Pint and Lloyd then walked to load the bases. Iverson hit a two run single closing the score to 6-5. D'Amato reached on an error which also scored Lloyd from second base to tie the score and setting up Rosier's game winner. Christian started on the mound for Montgomery pitching five complete innings. Rynda went the final two innings and picked up the win in relief. Leading hitters for Post 79 were Iverson with two hits, Dwyer with a triple and singles by D'Amato and Rosier.
Montgomery traveled to Le Sueur on Monday hosted Zumbrota on Wednesday. They will host Pine Island on Saturday, June 22, at 7 p.m.
